As a figure skater myself and on behalf of my two E sisters who are also figure skaters, I would like to share a deep tragedy that happened on January 29, 2025. Together, we stay united in grief and in memory of the lives tragically lost in the mid-air collision over the Potomac River on that Wednesday night.
This heartbreaking accident has not only devastated our local skating community across Virginia, Maryland, and the District of Columbia, but has also sent shockwaves through Boston and indeed, the entire nation. To the families, friends, and loved ones who are mourning this unimaginable loss, our hearts are with you.
As a fellow figure skater, I share in the sorrow that has touched so many of us deeply. Among those who perished were individuals we knew personally, cherished as teammates, and admired as friends. Their lives were filled with promise and dreams—dreams they were eagerly looking forward to fulfilling.
As we stand on this very ice where they graced us with their talent and presence at the U.S. National figure skating training camp only a few days ago, let us take a moment to honor their memory.
These young and gifted skaters left an indelible mark on our hearts, not just through their passion for the sport but also through the friendships they fostered and the joy they shared with everyone around them. Their absence is indescribable, and their presence will forever be felt in our rinks and community.
Let us hold onto the memories of their laughter, their dedication, and their unwavering spirit. As we reflect on their lives and their dreams, may we find solace in each other and strength in the bonds of our community.
In this moment of reflection, let us also pledge to keep their spirit alive by continuing to support each other with kindness and compassion. May we skate with the same passion that they exemplified, embracing each day with gratitude for the time we have together.
Thank you all for coming together in this time of mourning. Let us cherish every moment we have, both on and off the ice, in honor of those we have lost.
